Blackhawks owner Bill Wirtz and general manager Bob Pulford offered formal apologies to fans Wednesday for cancellation of the National Hockey League season, but the management duo could not hide its anger at the lost season.

"It's a very sad day for me," said Pulford, who has been an All-Star player, coach and executive in the league. "I vacillate between being angry and being sad. ... It's a bad day."

Joining Wirtz, his son and Blackhawks Vice President Peter Wirtz, and assistant general manager Dale Tallon at a news conference at the United Center, Pulford said the "pendulum has swung too far the other way" toward the players.
